Full description

Waugoola Shire (Shire No. 89) was established under the Local Government (Shires) Act, 1905. The Shire was surrounded by the parishes of Forbes and Cowra and was known as Shire No. 89. It was created on 7 March, 1906 when its boundaries were proclaimed by the NSW Government Gazette. (1)

On 16 May, 1906 the boundaries of the three ridings which comprised the Shire were proclaimed. (2) A Provisional Council which met for the first time on 13 June 1906 was responsible for setting up arrangements for the management of the Shire. (3) This was succeeded on 8 December 1906 by the first elected Council. (4)

In February 1948 in a redistribution of the boundaries of the Blaxland, Canobolas, Cudgegong, Lyndhurst, Oberon, Turon and Waugoola Shires, the boundaries of the 'C' riding of Waugoola Shire were altered by the exchange of parcels of land between the Waugoola and Lyndhurst Shires. (5)

In October 1949 approximately 400 acres in the 'B' Riding of Waugoola Shire was transferred to Boree Shire. (6)

The Waugoola Shire was abolished by the Local Government Areas Act, 1980 (Act no. 110, 1980) (5) from 1 January, 1981 when it was amalgamated with Cowra Shire.
