Full description
The purpose of this series was to record of the book value of locomotives and rolling stock. The cards show the original cost of the asset, costs of conversions, re-equipping, re-engineering and value at the time of disposal.
For each vehicle the cards record the number; class; tractive effort; power; wheel arrangement; cost; description; carrying capacity; maker’s name and number; weight; date put into service; whether under lease; and maintenance contract details.
The series is arranged, firstly, by category of stock: locomotive cards and rolling stock cards. Locomotive cards are arranged numerically by class and, within that arrangement, numerically by locomotive number. An internal index is present to indicate class of locomotive. Rolling stock cards are arranged by category: freight stock, coaching stock and departmental service vehicles and, within those categories, numerically by vehicle number.
An internal index indicates cards of condemned status, which were separated at the time of condemnation or disposal of stock. Unfortunately, this division has resulted in an overrun of numerical sequences between some boxes.
White accounting cards, summarising financial adjustments and referencing State Rail Authority box numbers (which will not now be relevant), have been retained to preserve original order and act as dividers between condemned and non-condemned stock cards.
Custody History
From 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an ‘in house archives’ consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.
This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as series R68. It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as series R68 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or unpublished works.
