Full description This project was established to document the involvement of the Australian Science Archives Project (ASAP) and subsequent organisations with the records of A.C.D. (David) Rivett (1885-1961). The papers were given the University of Melbourne Archives by the people who purchased Lady Rivett's house in Toorak in late 1987. After discussion with Ken Rivett, the owner of the papers, it was decided that they should join the rest of the ACD Rivett collection at the Basser Library, after being processed by ASAP. These papers deal with the organisation of the 1914 British Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Australia. The papers, which had been stored in a trunk in a garage, were in generally poor condition with some having suffered severe water damage and subsequent attack by mould. The trunk, untouched, was fumigated by the UMA, packed into flat archive boxes and transferred to the ASAP. A conservator was engaged to inspect the collection and certain items were removed for specialized treatment. A large collection of press cuttings, some in very poor condition, will be microfilmed before the papers are passed on to the Basser Library. This comprehensive set of papers is an extremely valuable find and will open avenues of research previously thought closed.
