Full description
The purpose of these notices was to inform transport staff of changes to bus services involving the rescheduling of particular buses, temporary and permanent route diversions, new bus services and timetables, re-location of bus stands and bus terminuses, plus roistering of ticket inspectors, sub inspectors, bus inspectors and shift supervisors. Special instructions concerning concessional tickets, fare increases, changes to fare sections, damage to buses, lost property, and the completion of incident reports are listed for both drivers and conductors. The running of special services for events such as the Royal Easter Show, Royal Visits, Public Holidays and sporting fixtures are also announced. In September 1952 the format of the Weekly Notice was changed with a reduction in size to a pocket edition while the special route instructions and ticketing information remained, more emphasis was placed on Staff Vacancies and Personnel Notices. There was also reporting from the newly formed Joint Consultative Committees whereby "the men on the job now have an avenue through which to recommend new ideas for the improvement in services and conditions of work". (1) By the mid 1950s issues with a predominance of staff matters were published under the title of 'Staff Journal and Weekly Notice'.
In late 1959 the format changed once again to a new foldout pamphlet size. In the 1970s the Weekly Notices began to promote a new philosophy that the "passengers are our business, not an interruption to work". (2)
With the formation of the Urban Transit Authority on 1 July 1980 this record series continued with instructions and notices for both Bus and Ferry Staff. However, every fourth notice added to its contents reports on staff sporting competitions and social events, plus letters to the editor. When advertised these Notices were referred to as "Staff Special Weekly Notices" although no change in title from Weekly Notice was made for publication. (3)
Urban Transit Weekly Notices for Newcastle covering 1988 form the last items of this series.
