The Department of Government Transport was established, as the Department of Government Transport and Omnibus Services on 1 June 1952,(1) under the Transport (Division of Functions) Amendment Act which separated the administration of public and private road transport services. The Transport (Division of Functions) Further Amendment Act, 1952 (Act No.24 1952) the department was renamed the Department of Government Transport on 27 October, 1952 and the Commissioner's title became Commissioner for Government Transport. (2) The Department of Government Transport was responsible for the public motor omnibus services of the State and also for the licensing of privately owned motor omnibus services. Until 1961 the department also controlled tramway services. Along with other departments concerned with transport, the Department of Government Transport was responsible to the Ministry of Transport established under the Ministry of Transport and Transport (Division of Functions) Acts, 1932. On 20 October 1972(3) the Public Transport Commission was established under Public Transport Commission Act, 1972 (Act No. 53, 1972), which received assent on 17 October.(4) This Act incorporated the Departments of Railways and Government Transport.
