These cards were compiled in the Department of Education and its successor agencies from approximately 1930, and record details of school sites purchased and subsequently disposed of since the early nineteenth century. These record cards include the key sections of firstly the "Sites Register" of the actual land and how it was acquired, secondly the eventual "disposals of land", thirdly a site map, plus fourthly on particular cards the "School Buildings". The acquisition of land data includes the school's name, municipality, parish, county, land purchased, area, nature of dealing (whether resumed), date and value. With the disposal of land details of the land, area, nature of the dealing (whether given up or revoked), date and value are recorded.

Each 34cm by 41cm card has either a site plan pasted to its back or a drawing of the local streets, or a sketch of the common. Specific Site Branch construction memoranda may also be pasted to the reverse side of the card with an "action approved" notation and signature. In some cases a land title number is recorded along with a notation stating that the land title documents have been amended. Further to this the Departmental file numbers for the land transactions and notes concerning the temporary leasing of sites may also be recorded. Some cards also give details of school buildings constructed over time and road ownership.
