Full description

This volume includes official methods for the analysis of soils, waters, plant nutrition, cereals, pesticides, and dairy chemistry kept by the Chemistry Branch of the Department of Agriculture.

It is arranged alphabetically with indexes at the front of each letter followed by details of the methods in use.

The matters cover include among others: arsenious oxide, arsenic pentoxide; atomic absorption spectrophotometry; analysis of butter samples for moisture and salt; field tests for pH and salt; determination of hardness and salinity in water; determination of calcium and magnesium in dolomites and limestone; fluoride determination in agricultural waters; laboratory standard solutions; soil analysis; description and setting up of the Hilger Large Quartz Spectograph E.492; methods used in Murrumbidgee Irriagation Area citrus investigation; estimation of lead and arsenic residues, and of captan, malathion, systox (Demeton) and trithion (R-1303) pesticides, in fruit and vegetables; nicotine; gluten determination in wheat and flour; rice laboratory - Yanco Agricultural Research Station; operation of the gluten washing machine; use of the Eel Flame Photometer; tetramethylthiuramdisulphide (TMTD); determination of gamma BHC by partitition chromatography; biuret determination in urea; and, ziram (zince dimethyldithiocarbamate). The official methods are mostly typed sheets, some with citations and file reference numbers (such as C.B. [Chemistry Branch] 49/397, C.B. 56/639), and are annotated with chemical compounds and some diagrams.

The volume's format is a sturdy post-binder apparently purchased from the stationers W.C. Penfold (inside cover design "WCP est. 1930").
