This series consists of a booklet containing printed forms used by the Bowral Local Exemption Court to certify an individual applicant’s exemption from military service during World War I.
The forms / certificates were filled in by hand then ripped out for issue along a perforated line leaving a carbon copy of the certificate behind in the booklet. Details filled in on each certificate include: the name, town and state the person resides in, the occupation and fingerprints of the applicant. Fingerprints have been supplied on both the original and copy of the certificate. Also included on the certificate is the type of exemption issued, e.g. conditional exemption or a temporary exemption. If the exemption is temporary, the period of the exemption is given. If conditional, the condition is detailed. The types of conditional exemptions detailed include: being an only son; being the sole support of elderly parents; under regulation 33 (E).
Each certificate is numbered, with this booklet containing certificates numbering from 66851-68700. The booklet has only been partially used, with certificates 68651 – 68670 filled out and issued. One certificate has been filled out but not removed from the booklet.
