Full description

The purpose of an admission register was to record basic details about children admitted to the school, and about their parents or guardians. The registers were also used to record the progress of the children through various classes and the date of their leaving the school.

The present series consists of a single volume, containing the entire record of admissions, progress and withdrawal at Cambra Provisional and Public Schools.

This volume contains information pertaining to each pupil including: date of admission; pupil's name; date of birth; religious denomination; name of previous school and date of leaving. The following details are recorded about the child's parents or guardians: name, residence and occupation. The pupil's date of admission to each subsequent grade, date of leaving the school and any occupation entered into on leaving school is also recorded; this last column also indicates the school to which a pupil may have transferred.

Girls and boys are listed on opposite pages in order of admission. Until the first closure of the school in August, 1948, these entries are numbered in two parallel and continuous sequences. Upon the re-opening of the school in 1954, the practice of beginning new numbering sequences for boys and for girls at the beginning of each school year commences.

The initial enrolments recorded include seventeen children who had previously attended the school’s precursor, the Cambra Subsidised School.

The last page of the register to bear any entries concludes with the following note:
“Cambra School closed on 20/3/64. Those children who
were attending the school up until 20/3/64 have been
shown in red ink. F.D. Sheedy T/C 20/3/64.”

Six children are so recorded, each of whom transferred to Dungog Central School.
