Full description

These Rules and Regulations were formulated to ensure the safe and efficient conduct of traffic, and for the instruction and guidance of railway employees. Each employee was issued with a copy of the Rules and Regulations and was expected to understand and comply with all the instructions it contained.

Initially produced by the Sydney Railway Company, the Rules and Regulations were progressively amended and elaborated, and subsequent to the Government Railways Act, 1858 (22 Vic, Act No19) were issued under the provisions of the Act, as amended.

The rules and regulations include instructions regarding signals, instructions directed to enginemen, firemen, guards, station masters, gatekeepers at level crossings, pointsmen, platelayers, and employees in workshops and goods yards, policies relating to the transport of passengers, goods, and livestock, procedures to be followed to ensure the safe and efficient movement of traffic, during maintenance and repairs, and in emergency situations such as trains stopped by accident, failure, or obstruction to the track.

Custody History

From 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an ‘in house archives’ consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.

This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as series R82. It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as series R82 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or unpublished works.
