Since 1880 the Public Works Department has had responsibility for the design and construction of water supply and sewerage schemes for country towns in New South Wales. In that year the Metropolitan Water and Sewerage Act and Country Towns Water and Sewerage Act were passed to deal separately with the problems of providing these services for metropolitan and rural areas. This was superseded by the Local Government Act, 1919, which provided a similar framework for undertaking such works. The files relate to such matters as: administration, investigation and finance of water supply and augmentation schemes in a number of country towns; agreements and authorisations; soil and foundation investigations; valve and water hammer investigations; environmental impact assessments; design of reservoirs and pumping stations; subsidies; operations and systems; investigation of meters at Wyong; chlorination and fluoridation; pipe protection; progress reports; steering committee reports for the Dubbo water supply; water management plans; water consumption and water requirement in coal mining and related industrial developments; flood discharges; dam levels; well sites; reserves for asset renewal and replacement for the Broken Hill Water Board; and water divination.
The files include papers going back to 1884.
