The Rivers, Water Supply and Drainage Branch of the Department of Public Works combined the Harbours and Rivers Branch and the Water Supply and Sewerage Branch in 1904. The Branch reported to the Engineer-in-Chief for Rivers, Water Supply and Drainage. (1)The work of this branch included harbour improvements, snagging of inland rivers, dredging, water supply through dams and reservoirs, water conservation facilities, plus country town sewerage schemes and stormwater channels. (2)
A reorganisation of the duties of the Branch occurred in April 1909 with the reformed Harbours and Water Supply Branch no longer dealing with water conservation and irrigation matters. (3)
