Full description
This series comprises surveys of ports, rivers and coastline used in the administration of harbours and river navigation. The series includes maps of the Naval Station at Garden Island, Port Jackson, Sydney Cove, Darling Harbour and Woolloomooloo. There are also maps and plans unrelated to coastal and river navigation, including plans of Trial Bay Prison and the Nautical School Ship "Sobraon".
Many of the plans are signed by the Chief Engineer, including Edwin Orpen Moriarty who was the first Engineer-in-Chief for Harbours and Rivers of the Department of Lands and Public Works from 10 October 1858.
They are also labelled with “HR” control numbers or stamped with the Public Works Department Harbours and Rivers Branch plan room stamp. Maps and plans dated before the 1850s appear to have been created by preceding agencies such as the Surveyor General.
