The Academic Senate was responsible, 'subject to the By-laws or to any resolution of Council[1],' for the direction and co-ordination of the teaching activities of the University, and for maintaining student discipline. It was created under University by-laws 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4, approved 'for operating purposes' by Council resolution 19/65 on 8th January, 1965 (the Common Seal of the University not being affixed to the complete code of By-laws until 9th November of the same year). Senate met for the first time on 3rd February, 1965, and monthly thereafter, except that until 1984 meetings were not held in January, and from that year, not in December. The final meeting of Senate was held on the 25th October, 1989. No instrument explicitly abolished the Senate, but it may be taken to have been superseded by the new Senate created by the University of Newcastle Act, 1989, and established under University By-laws 32-36, approved by H.E. the Governor on 27th October, 1989[2].
