The Metropolitan Meat Industry Board [II] was established by the Meat Industry (Amendment) Act, 1950 (Act No.24, 1950) assented to 16 May 1950, which abolished the preceding Metropolitan Meat Industry Commissioner and the Metropolitan Meat Industry Advisory Council. (1)The Act was proclaimed on 15 December 1950, to commence on 1 January 1951. (2) A notice of transfer of the administration of the Meat Industry Act 1915-43, and the Meat Industry (Amendment) Act 1950, from the Minister for Health to the Minister for Agriculture, was also published. (3)
The Meat Industry (Amendment) Act, 1950 (Act No.24, 1950), carried forward the responsibilities detailed in the Meat Act, 1915 (Act No.69, 1915):
* maintenance and control of abattoirs and slaughterhouses, saleyards and markets within the County of Cumberland,
* provision for the selling, exporting, or otherwise dealing with products derived from abattoir operations, and
* the right to regulate entry into the Metropolitan Meat Industry area of all meat slaughtered elsewhere.(4)
The Metropolitan Meat Industry Board [II] consisted of three members appointed by the Governor:
* one appointed as Chairman,
* one a representative of persons employed in the meat industry, and
* one a representative of the producers of cattle.
Persons directly or indirectly associated with businesses involved in the sale or export of meat were exempt from appointment. (5)
The Meat Industry (Further Amendment) Act, 1978 (Act No.150, 1978) abolished the Metropolitan Meat Industry Board [II], and established the Homebush Abattoir Corporation. (6)
