Full description

This dataset contains data to support Pepler and Austin (2026) Wet/windy extremes with significant impacts in Australia, as an output of NESP project 5.6: Extreme rain in compound events. Files include monthly numbers of wet/windy days calculated from the BARRA-C2 reanalysis for Australia, 1979-2025, in addition to regional timeseries for regions in eastern Australia.

Lineage

stationlist.csv is the list of all Bureau of Meteorology stations used for detailed regional analysis, including their associated region. For further information see http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/data BARRA-C2_regionmask.nc is a netCDF mask of the regions used in this analysis on the 4km BARRA-C2 grid. For further details on the BARRA-C2 regional reanalysis see https://dx.doi.org/10.25914/jz7g-x858 regional_timeseries_wetwindy.tar.gz is the daily timeseries of key meteorological datasets for each region used in the paper between 1/1/2015 and 31/2/2025. This includes the maximum daily wind gust and 1h and 24h rainfall totals for all stations in the region, as well as the regional maximum percentile of rainfall. It also includes the regional maximum wind gust and 1h and 24h rainfall totals from BARRA-C2, and the area (in grid cells) of the region with wet/windy conditions, defined by gusts >= 80km/h and rainfall >= the 98th percentile. Impact.Cat is the associated impacts dataset, where "Severe" is totals above the 99.7th percentile, "Major" is >= the 99th percentile and "Significant" is >= the 95h percentile. BARRA-C2_wetwindy_monthly_rq98g80_prfloor.nc is the monthly number of wet/windy days (defined by gusts >= 80km/h and rainfall >= the 98th percentile) as calculated from the BARRA-C2 reanalysis for each point between 1979 and 2024.
