The Museum of Ancient Cultures at Macquarie University, Sydney, holds some 700 papyri, mainly in Greek, but also in other languages and scripts, such as Demotic and Coptic (Egyptian). Most are written on papyrus, but the collection also includes some texts on ostraca (potsherd), parchment, and wood. Most of the texts date from the 3rd century BC to the 8th century AD. The Museum holds 49 texts written in Coptic, on both papyrus and parchment. All come from Egypt, but the provenance is not always known.
