Brief description

Mr Karl Van Dyke is the Director of the Museum of Ancient Cultures at Macquarie University. He studied Archaeology at the University of Sydney (1972-1976), before taking up a career as an Ancient History teacher. He has worked at Macquarie University since 1991 and has a strong interest in university museums and collections (UMACs), being a member of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Macquarie's UMACs as well as part of the team that held national surveys of university museums and collections, culminating in two ground breaking publications, the Cinderella Collections. Karl spent a number of years as Vice-President and then as national President of CAUMAC, the Council of Australian University Museums and Collections, as it merged with Museums Australia. He also supported the establishment of the international UMAC movement as it became a part of ICOM in Paris, and has attended and given papers at a number of the interantional conferences. Karl has an on-going interest in archaeology, in material culture and the world of museums, and researches and publishes on aspects of the latter.
