Full description This project was established to document the involvement of the Australian Science Archives Project (ASAP) and subsequent organisations with the records of Sir Ian William Wark. Wark was born in Melbourne on 8 May 1899. He was educated in chemistry at the University of Melbourne and at University College, London, where he received his PhD. He then undertook post-doctoral studies in California, at Berkeley. From 1926 to 1939 Wark was research chemist for a number of mining companies particularly Electrolytic Zinc. From 1939 to 1965 Wark worked for CSIRO in a number of areas: from 1939 to 1958 he was Chief of the Division of Industrial Chemistry; from 1958 to 1960 he was Director of the Chemical Research Laboratories and was a member of the Executive from 1960 to 1965. From 1965 to 1971 Wark chaired the Commonwealth Advisory Committee on Advanced Education, and from 1971 to 1976 was a member of the South Australian Board of Advanced Education. Wark was elected to the Australian Academy of Science in 1954. He died in 1985. The records were listed by ASAP staff member Gavan McCarthy, with assistance from Eleanor Ellis and Ann Gray.
