On the file cover is the reference number, the section of the Act under which it was made, date of the reference, date it was dealt with by the Board, the building or structure, its situation and the name of the owner and occupant. Clauses 27 and 29 of the City of Sydney Improvement Act provided for action to be taken by the Board regarding building, and other structures deemed unsatisfactory or dangerous to the public by the City Building Surveyor. Once notified of these buildings by the Surveyor the Board could conduct inspections and hearings and make a decision for or against demolition, alteration or repairs.

This series comprises files, each of which has been given a running number and contains the records relevant to a particular building referred to the Board by the Surveyor.
