Full description

This series consists of working copies of railway construction plans kept by Head Office. The plans contain information about the landscape surrounding rail corridors, including the size and shape of lots, land owners' names, the curve and gradients of the land on which the track was to be laid, changes to names of places or stations, the disposition of railway buildings at stations and layouts of towns around stations. Also included are geographical and man-made features such as rivers, crossings, bridges and tunnels.

The plans comprising this series were produced following the proclamation of the original construction plans. The proclaimed plans were copied on to metre-wide sheets and bound into book-form for use by engineers, surveyors and land valuers. These working plan books, which contain multiple sheets, are generally grouped together by railway with each book relating to a section of a line.

The annotation of physical plans ceased in 1998 when the Department moved to a geographic information system (GIS) to manage and capture land information. Digital images began to be used for reference and research purposes as part of undertaking land investigations and conversions for the issue of certificates of title.
