Full description

The files in this series were managed in the agency’s Computer Aided Records Management System (CARMS), hence their name. Files predating the CARMS were input into the system, documenting the functions administered by Spatial Services and its predecessors. This covers a broad range of work undertaken by agencies responsible for land mapping and surveying.

This series includes files concerning: the formulation of policy and conduct of operations relating to mapping; horizontal, geodetic and cadastral surveying; agency marketing; surveyor regulation; geographic naming; significant joint venture clients; government relations; more general agency-wide strategic management and agency operational files. Mapping and Geographic naming files may include discussion of cultural significance of certain geographic features and names.

There are multiple file arrangements used in CARMS:

Chronological: Historically, chronologically registered files consisted of a year/number/part file number (e.g. part 1 of the 20th file created in 1983 would be 83/20/1). Later variations of the chronological file arrangements included a dash in place of the slash between the file and part numbers, an expanded year identifier, and the expansion of the file number from two or three digits to four.

LID files: Alphanumerically registered files consist of the three-letter prefix LID (for Lands Information Department), followed by an alphanumeric format/number/part file number (e.g. transaction files are numbered LID T.12345.1; policy files are numbered LID P.12345.1).

GNB files: Alphanumerically registered files only used within the Geographic Names Board. Consists of the GNB prefix with a four digit file number.
