This series comprises aerial photography indexes created by the Department of Main Roads and later the Roads and Traffic Authority. It consists of key diagrams on maps which mark out the areas of planned main roads in rural and urban areas of NSW. Each map displays the area photographed aerially as part of road planning.

Various means have been used to record/chart onto key diagrams. From 1937, a road project’s runs were given a two letter prefix, from AA, then AB, AC to ZY and ZZ before starting at AAA in the early 1990s. Each road project was designated a particular prefix. Runs of key diagrams for a particular project were usually numbered consecutively, e.g. AA1, AA2, AA3, etc.
