The series consists of the signed, typescript minutes of the original Council of the University of Newcastle, bound in five volumes. Council normally met every second month. In keeping with Council’s role as “the governing authority of the University” having “the entire control and management of the affairs and concerns of the University” (University of Newcastle Act, 1964, s.8.(2), 22.(1)(c)), matters dealt with at Council meetings included (but were not confined to) major policy decisions on University development, course and degree offerings, legal matters affecting the University, relations between the University, the State and Federal Governments and other outside bodies, and appointments to the major offices within the University. It was also Council’s role to grant degrees and other academic awards, on the recommendation of the Academic Senate.
