Full description

This in-house journal was produced for the information and entertainment of employees of the Public Transport Commission of New South Wales. Transport News conveyed news and articles of interest to staff from November 1972 after the Government incorporated the former Department of Railways and the Department of Government Transport into the Public Transport Commission. The journal was intended for railway, bus, and from January 1973, ferry staff. The journal included articles on the official activities of the Public Transport Commission and State Rail Authority including the opening of new routes and railway lines, the upgrading of tracks, purchase of new vehicles, improvement of infrastructure, introduction of new services, and coverage of noteworthy events. The journal also included articles on the personal, sporting, and social activities of staff. Photographs were used to illustrate the journal and some issues contain colour photographs.

In July 1980, the Public Transport Commission was abolished and the State Rail Authority of New South Wales was established. From August 1980, Transport News reported only on the activities of the State Rail Authority. In September 1981, Transport News was replaced by a new journal titled State Wide.


Custody History

From 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an ‘in house archives’ consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.

This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as series R67 "In-house publications". It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as series R67 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or unpublished works.

State Rail series R67 was separated into 14 individual series.
