The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as series R67 In-house publications. It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as series R67 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or unpublished works. This in-house journal of the New South Wales Government Railways was produced for the entertainment and instruction of employees. The journal was described in its first editorial in September 1958 as being an overdue forum to discuss problems and as a way of disseminating news to employees. The Commissioner had a regular column in which he discussed current issues involving the Government Railways.

The journal also contained articles on the Railway’s official activities and the personal, sporting, and social activities of staff. Early editions contained a column in which basic facts about the Railway Department were presented to those entering the service. The journal is illustrated with photographs.

"The Railwayman" was last issued in October 1972 due to the Department of Railways being incorporated into the Public Transport Commission of New South Wales.

From 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an ‘in house archives’ consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000.
