Full description
This digest largely consisted of excerpts from articles published in foreign periodicals. In 1937, the Commissioner for Railways, Mr T. J. Hartigan, established the digest because he was "of the opinion" staff would be interested to study the problems involved, and the results achieved, in railway operation throughout the world. Each excerpt was fully referenced and the digest states the full article was available in the Railway’s library. The excerpts were taken from leading transport publications throughout the world, particularly Britain. Some issues of the digest also contain information about the railway system in New South Wales including statistics on the number of passengers carried and the tonnage of goods and livestock transported. Also included are financial statistics and selected abstracts from the Report of the Commissioner for the year ended 30 June 1938.
Custody History
From 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an ‘in house archives’ consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the ‘State Rail Archives’ the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.
This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as series R67 "In-house publications". It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as series R67 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or unpublished works.
State Rail series R67 was separated into 14 individual series.
