Full description
This volume is comprised of the calculations, diagrams and plans for the construction of the Cataract Dam.
The first item in the volume is a local sketch of the dam. Tables include the crushing strength of both dry and wet concrete blocks and the load bearing of concrete; the capacities of the Cataract Storage Reservoir; areas and centres of gravity of various sections; maximum and minimum pressure on dam when full; factors of safety against overturning; friction factors; various types of concrete to be used; the estimated cost of construction; and flood discharge details as supplied by the Water and Sewerage Board.
The linen-backed plans include elevations, sections and site plan, geological section, and stress diagrams.
An Index to the calculations appears in the front of the volume.
Loose inside the back of the volume is a carbon copy of the tables relating to the testing of the sandstone blocks and concrete.
The number 3G/185 appears on the front endpapers of this volume. Its significance is unknown. It was possibly a location symbol when the record was active or in storage.
