Full description

The series contains maps and plans of areas of New South Wales depicting portions of land, towns, villages, squatting districts, counties, parishes, roads, rivers, mountains and railways. Some plans also include descriptions of vegetation and soil, arability of land and other factual details.

Annotations were periodically added to the plans, noting sale of land, determinations for changing land use, gazettal information, plan cancellation (where this had occurred), names of land holders, bank resumptions and Deposited Plan numbers. Parish and Country details were also added to early plans that had been created before the county system developed.

The plans were originally assigned consecutive running numbers. Later certain types of plans were assigned an area or feature number (known as the small number). They were further distinguished by a plan number (known as the large number). Some plans were also given alphabetical prefixes to distinguish between different maps and plans with the same small number.

A part of this series of Crown plans held by State Records was formerly known as Maps and plans [Surveyor General].
