These volumes record details of the earnings of those employed at the Rothbury Colliery during its operation by the State.

There are columns for the recording of the following information for each employee: a running number, name, occupation, hours worked, pay rate, amount earned, deductions (e.g. quarters, medical, canteen, fares, crib tins, pay offs), amount due, and remarks (e.g. paid). The running number sometimes appears in the remarks column. Not all columns are necessarily used.

The journals are arranged by pay period so are basically chronological. These periods, numbered 1 to 15, date from 13 December 1929 to 18 June 1930. The details of a small number of workers employed up until 8 July 1930 are also recorded.
