Full description

The New South Wales Film and Television Office was constituted as a corporation under the Film and Television Office Act, 1988 (1) (formerly the Film Industry Act, 1988), which was proclaimed on 1 July 1988 (2).

The Board of the NSW Film and Television Office consisted of seven members nominated by the Minister and appointed by the Governor. One of the Board members was to be from outside the film and television industry (3).

The main functions of the Office were to :
(1) have sole responsibility for the making, promoting, distributing, and exhibiting short films, and documentary films, for departments of the Government and statutory bodies representing the Crown; . (2) contribute, financially and otherwise, to the work of film festivals and markets; (3) provide financial and other assistance for persons (including directors, producers, actors, writers and technicians) whose work in the film and television industry merits encouragement; (4) provide assistance to the film and television industry in any operations in the State and to disseminate information on it activities; (5) provide financial and other assistance for script and project development for film and television; (6) carry out such obligations and responsibilities determined by the Minister as may be necessary for the maintenance and administration of : the film catalogue vested in the Office at the commencement of the Act, and films that in post production at the commencement and in which the Office has a substantial financial interest (4).

On 5 June 2009 the New South Wales Film and Television Office (FTO) announced it would become known as 'Screen NSW'. Chief Executive Tania Chambers said, "The new name recognises that the digital age is here. The world no longer sees screen as purely film or television. People now make, share and see moving images on digital formats and platforms at home, work and school, in the cinema and on the move. FTO needs to be flexible to adapt to the implications of the digital age." (5)

From 1 July 2009 Screen NSW was transferred from the Department of Arts, Sport and Recreation to the Department of Industry and Investment. (6)

From 4 April 2011 when the name of the Department of Industry and Investment was changed Screen NSW became a branch of the Department of Trade and Investment, Regional Infrastructure and Services.(7)
