Full description This record provides an overview of the NESP Marine and Coastal Hub study 'Mapping and characterising Australia’s tropical shellfish reefs'. For specific data outputs from this project, please see child records associated with this metadata.
This project will assess the current status of tropical oyster (also called shellfish) reefs across Northern Australia. A combination of satellite imagery, community consultations facilitated by OzFish and The Nature Conservancy, and Traditional Owner Knowledge will be used to develop a comprehensive map of past and present oyster reefs and underpin DCCEEW assessments of future protection and restoration needs. Full assessments of reef condition at selected sites will be used to develop rapid assessment methods suitable for estimating oyster populations, supported biodiversity, habitat preferences and settlement substrates to inform future management, monitoring, and conservation status of tropical oyster reefs.
Planned Outputs
• Locations of shellfish reefs [point spatial dataset]
• Full characterisation of 7 shellfish reef sites in Queensland, Mackay to Gladstone region Queensland that include 3D photogrammetry, polygon boundaries with site attribution based on Queensland Intertidal and Subtidal Ecosystem Classification Scheme. [polygon spatial dataset, drone scans]
• Photogrammetry imagery [raw images]
• Historical shellfish reefs identified from Trove records and from Traditional Owner discussions [point spatial datasets]
• Final technical report with analysed data and a short summary of recommendations for policy makers of key findings [written]
