The New South Wales Act to provide for the Registration of Brands was assented to on 5 October 1866. The Act required the New South Wales Registrar General, in his capacity as Registrar of Brands, to prepare a quarterly report, for publication in the Government Gazette, of brands registered during the preceding quarter and to publish an annual Brand Directory "containing a correct and complete list of all brands and of the names and residences of their respective proprietors".These are consolidated lists of large stock brands allotted in New South Wales between 1873 and 1958. Prior to 1 January 1959, separate Directories were published. Brands registered subsequently were published only in the New South Wales Government Gazette.
The Directories are annual alphabetical lists of all brands, with the names of the owners, and their addresses, brands cancelled and corrections. Later Directories allot brand numbers
(7/1975-1982F, 7/2091-2142B, 8/1384A-1385B.2, 7/7787). 67 vols, 4 boxes (part).
