Full description

The Department of Mines and Agriculture was formed with the appointment the Secretary of Mines and Agriculture on 23 October 1891. (1) Agriculture was placed under the administration of the Secretary for Mines whose title was altered to that of Secretary for Mines and Agriculture. From this time the three main functions of the Agricultural branch of the Department were research, education and advice, with decentralisation the keynote.

The Department of Agriculture and Mines were divided, when the Department of Agriculture became a department in its own right under the Department of Agriculture Act No.6, 1907, assented to 17 December 1907. (2) The first Director of Agriculture was appointed on 22 January 1908. (3)
