In 2011, Professor David Karoly is the Professor of Meteorology and an ARC Federation Fellow in the School of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Science, at the University of Melbourne. He originally studied applied Mathematics at Monash University and then gained his PhD in Meteorology at the University of Reading in 1980. Professor Karoly has spent much of his professional career at Monash University, heading the Department of Mathematics and Statistics as well as being the Professor of Meteorology and Director of the Co-operative Research Centre fro Southern Hemisphere Meteorology. From 2003 to 2007 he was professor of Meteorology at the University of Oklahoma. He joined the University of Melbourne in 2007. Professor Karoly is a renowned expert in climate change science and was involved in the preparation of the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on climate Change (IPCC), which was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. Professor Karoly is the Chief Investigator in the project funded by the Australian Research Council "Reconstructing pre-20th century rainfall, temperature and pressure for south eastern Australia using paleoclimate, documentary and early weather station data".
