Brief description

This website provides access to digitised collection of major journals of the early inland exploration of the Australian continent. The collection contains documents describing journeys to Australia, the establishment of early settlements, and the first European encounters with the harsh geography of the interior of an unknown continent.  The journal content includes biographies, diaries and expedition journals, and covers topics including travel, mining exploration, "tours of discovery", and maritime exploration.  The collection will be of interest to researchers and students interested in the history of Australian discovery, early exploration,  and settlement, from the early 17th century, through the early 20th century.

The journals of inland exploration website is part of the Australian Digital Collections website, which is hosted and managed by the University of Sydney Library.
