Brief description
The Journals of Inland Exploration is a digitised collection of major journals of the early exploration of the Australian continent. The collection contains documents describing journeys to Australia, the establishment of early settlements, and the first European encounters with the harsh geography of the interior of an unknown continent. The journal content includes biographies, diaries and expedition journals, and covers topics including travel, mining exploration, "tours of discovery", and maritime exploration. The collection will be of interest to researchers and students interested in the history of Australian discovery, early exploration, and settlement, from the early 17th century, through to the early 20th century.
Original texts were transcribed and encoded in TEI XML format. The documents are available in TEI XML and PDF format via the Journals of Inland Exploration Website. The Journals of Inland Exploration collection is part of the Australian Digital Collections website, hosted by the University of Sydney Library.
