Full description

The Secondary Schools Board was constituted under section 7 (1) of the Education Act (No.47, 1961). Its functions were: * to make recommendations to the Minister in relation to matters connected with or concerning the conduct of any examination required to be attempted by candidates for school certificates and the award of such certificates;
* to make arrangements as might be necessary for the conduct of those examinations and to regulate the conduct of those examinations;
* to advise the Minister on the courses of study to be followed by pupils in secondary schools and by candidates for school certificates, regard being made to the requirements of a sound general education and to the desirability of providing a variety of curricula adequate to meet the varying aptitudes and abilities of pupils concerned, and to authorise the grant of school certificates; and
* to appoint for each subject of the secondary school curriculum special committees for the purpose of recommending to the Secondary Schools Board the content of any such course of study. The Board was constituted on 27 April, 1961 (1) The Board made extensive use of committees in the carrying out of its functions. The Education and Public Instruction Act, 1987, repealed the Education Act, 1961 and constituted a Board of Secondary Education in place of the Secondary Schools Board and the Board of Senior School Studies. The Board presumably lapsed on or about 17 August, 1987 when the new Act came into force. (2) FOOTNOTES
