Full description
Yarrangobilly was constituted as a Shire on 7 March 1906, under the Local Government (Shires) Act, 1905 (Act No.33, 1905). (1)
This Act provided for a Temporary Council of up to five members who, within six months, were obliged to make the necessary preparations for the election of the first Council. Yarrangobilly’s Temporary Shire Councillors were: Thomas Patrick Arragon of Condongblonga, Adelong; George Clout of Brungle; Henry Frederick Lampe of Talbingo; William Daniel Patrick O’Brien of Tumut; and Sydney John Treweek of Grahamstown. (2)
The first Shire Council members were: D. L. Herliny, A. W. Molineaux, G. Clout Snr., W. J. Boston and H. W. Mason. (3)
The Yarrangobilly Shire’s boundaries were as follows: Beginning at the south-western corner of the Parish of Hillas, County of Wynyard, the border line moved in a north-easterly direction, generally along the Bago Creek to where the southern boundary of the Parish of Yellowin and the Tumut River meet. The boundary then travelled south along that river to the eastern boundary of the County of Buccleuch, up that boundary line to the Parish of Cowrajago and then west to include the Parishes of Cowrajago, Wyangle and Brungle to the Tumut River. The border then moved west into the County of Wynard, along the northern boundaries of the Parishes of Minjary, Calafat, Euadera, and Ellerslie, until it met the boundary of the Land District of Tumut, which it followed south back to the Parish of Hillas. This boundary was exclusive of the Municipality of Tumut. (4)
Matters dealt with by the Shire included rates, impoundings, sanitary concerns, public works, subdivisions, housing, public recreation areas, and road and bridge maintenance.
The name of the Shire was changed to Gadara on 13 February 1907. (5)
On 6 June 1928, it was announced that the Municipal District of Tumut and the Shire of Gadara would amalgamate and so the Council become known as Tumut Shire Council. This amalgamation came into effect on 1 July 1928. (6)
