Seafloor features revealed by the backscatter and swath bathymetry have shown that geomorphology of the study areas is diverse. The continental slope of the west Australian margin study areas is characterised by large areas with numerous deeply incised canyons and areas with low-angle slumps and scarps mostly on the upper part of the slope. Other geomorphic features on the continental slope include short escarpments of local extent and small volcanic peaks over the Houtman Sub-basin part of the Perth margin. New bathymetry from the Cuvier Plateau has mapped large volcanic domes, some of them with terraces, ridges, a large previously unmapped valley and two large seamounts (newly named the Cuvier Seamount and the Wallaby seamount). The dataset contains eight XYZ grids of 100m resolution; colour tiff images shaded with sun azimuth 45 degrees and a geotiff of the entire survey with a depth legend to go with the images.The data was acquired onboard the RV. Sonne during the period of the 25th of October 2008 to 19th of January 2009 using the Kongsberg multibeam bathymetric system EM120 (12 kHz) that emits 191 beams per ping and 2 degrees width along track and 2 degrees width across track and an angular coverage of 150 degrees (75 degrees port/7 degrees starboard). The data was converted into the bathymetry processing software, CARIS HIPS & SIPS using the following procedures: 1- A vessel configuration file was created for RV Sonne, where the co-ordinates of the motion sensor and DGPS antenna and patch test offsets were recorded. 2- The raw swath sonar data, in raw.all format, for each line was then imported into the project and the vessel information assigned to the data. 3- The motion sensor, DGPS and heading data were then cleaned using a filter that averaged adjacent data to remove artifacts. 4- Different sound velocity profiles data for each block were attached to the corresponding raw swath sonar data files to correct the depths for changes in the speed of sound through the water column. 5- Then a new blank field area was defined that specified the geographic area of study and the co-ordinate system used. The co-ordinates for all the study areas were WGS84 UTM-49S for Zeewyck, Houtman, Exmouth sub basins, Wallaby Plateau and Trans2 areas. 6- The data was cleaned by applying several filters that removed any remaining spikes in the bathymetry data using user defined threshold values. A visual inspection of the data for each line was then undertaken where artefacts and noisy data not removed by the filtering process were removed manually using Swath and subset editors modules of the Caris HIPS/SIPS software. 7- All the data for each bathymetric, motion sensor, DGPS, heading, tide and sound velocity profile data were merged to produce the final processed data file.
