Full description

AIMS collected coral cores in the Exmouth Gulf, North West Cape - Australian North West Shelf from three large Porites lutea colonies at South Muiron Island, Tantabiddi Lagoon and Bundegi Reef in November 1994. Two cores from each colony were collected to reconstruct the climate and environmental history of the region from the annual density bands, luminescent bands and geochemical tracers contained within the coral skeleton.

The cores from South Muiron Island and Tantabiddi Lagoon were analyised for growth and luminescence using X-radiographs, gamma densitometry, and coral UV fluorescence proceedures. The data are used to determine river discharge data.

Isotopic analyses of two of the coral cores from South Muiron Island and Tantabiddi lagoon were undertaken by Anne Muller as part of her PHD study at RSES, ANU. These results for cores at Tantibidi Lagoon and South Muiron Island were published in Muller et al. (2004).
