The series of files constitutes the Register of Determinations (the Register) created by the Psychosurgery Review Board (PRB)

Under section 58 (1) of the Mental Health Act 1986 (the MHA 1986), a psychiatrist who sought to arrange for a neurosurgeon to perform psychosurgery on a person was required to apply to the Psychosurgery Review Board for consent to the performance of the proposed psychosurgery. The creation of a Register was specified under section 28 of the MHA 1986.

The Register contains particulars of applications lodged with the PRB and all determinations of the PRB and reasons for those determinations. Records in the series consists of the files created for patients who had a hearing before the PRB. The files details the application number, patient's given name, surname, date of birth and the date of hearing.
