The records in this series document Victorian Railways distance statistics. These statistics were used to provide a summary of the distance travelled by vehicles, goods and passengers transported, and were used for reports, submissions and planning of services.Information recorded in the statistic books includes:
- Gross Ton Miles/Kilometres in Sections: showing down and up for all types of services (passenger, goods, rail motor and departmental)
- Section Totals: showing figures for passenger, goods and rail motor
- Goods: district totals, district by period, district by section
- Passenger Country: district totals, district by period and district by section
- Passenger Suburban: locomotive hauled, district totals, district by period and district by section
- Rail Motor: district totals, district by period and district by section
- Departmental: district by period and district by section
- Border Railways: yearly summaries
- Mileage Statistic of Goods by type: e.g. regular, general, wool, manure, fruit, meat, flour, metal, livestock, wheat, wood, coal/oil
Researchers should note the statistics were originally recorded in miles (imperial system) until 1974, then statistics were recorded in kilometres (SI metric system).
