Full description

This series comprises a photocopy of the original index to the Parish and Township Record Plans, also known as the Put Away Plans. The copy was created in c. 1985 and subsequently became the primary record to index all new plans created post 1985 until 2001.

Entries are arranged alphabetically, generally by Parish or Township name, although there are some subject-based headings such as Aboriginal Reserves and Cemeteries.

Under each locality name (e.g Hawthorn) the following details of plans are provided -
- a field note reference (year and number - usually expressed as a fraction),
- Other features shown on the map may also be listed here (e.g. township of Kew)
- Plan number allocated to the plan. E.g. H17, 'H' being the first letter of Hawthorn. Most plans will be numbered with the plan number beginning with the first letter from the name of the Parish or Township
- General Crown description of land covered by the plan (i.e., sections/allotments/portions. For example, plan H17 covers town allotments Section 1, allotments 1-8 and Section 4, allotments, 1-13.

'C' indicates a Compilation plan, ie the plan has been drawn from a compilation of existing plans.
'S' is found in many entries. This indicates that the plan has resulted from a survey.

An entry for a Compilation Plan is often accompanied by an entry for the Manuscript version, stored away from regular access. It is believed that the Manuscript versions were not microfilmed and therefore will not be located in VPRS 16931. Compilation plans include the same base information as manuscript plans but the compilation plans were used by the Department as working record plans as details of Crown land dealings were added to them during their working life.

This series is a copy of the record which is understood to be the master index for all the Record Plans created by the Department and is likely to have been maintained and stored in Melbourne throughout its active life. Other versions of the Index are known to exist and were possibly created for reference in the various District Survey Offices.

In c.1985 the original Index (VPRS 16719) ) and the Put Away Record Plans (VPRS 16306 p1) were microfilmed. A microfiche copy of each series has been transferred to PROV, see VPRS 16935 and VPRS 16931 respectively.
