This series documented employment histories and staff location details of employees who worked for the Transport Operations Branch/Transportation Branch of the Victorian Railways and the Transport Operations Division of the State Transport Authority during the period ?1926 to 1986.On 1 July 1984 the Transport Operations Division absorbed those parts of the former Rolling Stock, Way and Works, Transportation, Freight,Trading and Catering Services Branch and the Signal and Communications Section of the former Electrical Engineering Branch which were involved with non-metropolitan passenger and freight services.
The organisation structure of the Transport Operations Division was decentralised with both regional management and two Head Office coordinating groups: Engineering and Development and Operations Co-ordination, each having responsibility for their own staff.
Key operational matters such as train and locomotive control, timetabling, carriage and wagon utilisation and maintenance, and track maintenance were controlled by the two Head Office groups while local management of stations, yards, depots freight terminals, maintenance facilities and day-to-day matters involving V/Line personnel became regional responsibilities.
