Full description
This series comprises general subject correspondence files created and maintained by the Ministry of Employment and Training (1982-1985), Department of Labour II (1985-1987), and State Training Board (1987-1988).
The series contains inwards correspondence and copies of outwards correspondence relating to the promotion of employment and industrial training initiatives, job creation, the co-ordination and supervision of apprenticeship training - both on the job training and formal training provided by TAFE Colleges, and the provision of employment and training assistance.
The Ministry of Employment and Training and its successor agencies provided administrative support to the Industrial Training Commission and hence this series also contains correspondence of the Industrial Training Commission. The duties of the Commission included to review the requirements of the State for skilled tradespeople and technicians, promotion of apprenticeship schemes, and to review the adequacy of training apprentices in employers workshops and TAFE Colleges.
The series in custody is not the entire series, it is only the portion of the original Ministry of Employment and Training General Subject Correspondence files which relate to industrial and apprenticeship training. As the responsibility for industrial and apprenticeship training has been transferred to successive agencies the files have followed function, see VPRS 10982.
The responsibility for industrial and apprenticeship training was transferred to the State Training Board when it was established in November 1987. The State Training Board continued to maintain this series for approximately six months until the staff from the Training Division of the Department of Labour were relocated to join the staff of the former TAFE Board, c.June 1988. It was at this time that this series was closed and the State Training Board continued to maintain the series inherited from the TAFE Board, see VPRS 11381 General Correspondence Files, Annual Single Number System.
