The Social and Contextual Determinants of Pain Recognition

Research Project

Full description The diagnosis and treatment of pain relies on self-report. Clinicians also use nonverbal cues to contextualise this information. This project aims to examine what influences the recognition of painful faces under natural circumstances. For this, I will develop a task testing one's ability to effectively recognise people in severe physical pain. Then I will investigate stimulus properties and personal traits that predict efficient pain recognition. Outcomes will inform clinical training practices.
