Research Project
Full description This project collected data from a range of primary and secondary sources to examine the impact of hate speech laws, first enacted in 1989 in New South Wales, on public discourse in Australia since that time. We collected letters to the editor, complaints data from human rights/anti-discrimination authorities, relevant Tribunal and Court cases, interviews with lawyers, interviews conducted by Cultural and Indigenous Research Centre Australia with 100 target community members, interviews with community organisations, interviews with media representatives, and reports produced by human rights and community organisations during the relevant period.
