Surprising vs. expected feedback in learning via corrective feedback

Research Project

Full description Adult participants learned cue-target word pairs in three experiments. Cues were homographs (e.g., bank) and targets were in the expected or dominant sense of the cue or in the unexpected sense of the cue. In Experiments 1 and 2, the targets were in the dominant (e.g., money for bank) or subordinate (e.g., river for bank) sense of the homograph cue. In Experiment 3 all targets were in the dominant sense of the cue, and prime phrases presented prior to the cue activated its dominant or subordinate sense. There was a learning advantage for targets in the expected sense of the cue.
