A de novo transcriptome assembly constructed 18,678 protein-coding genes of high confidence that yield 23,945 non-redundant transcripts, of which we functionally annotated 82%. The transcriptome is similar to other passerine transcriptomes in terms of size and completeness. Further, our transcriptome assembly covers 87% of the predicted transcriptome of the draft genome currently available on NCBI. The European starling, Sturnus vulgaris, is a prolific and worldwide invasive species that also has served as an important model for avian ecological and invasion research. Although the genome sequence recently has become available, no transcriptome data have been published for this species. Here, we have sequenced and assembled S. vulgaris liver transcriptome.
